In 1979, brothers Leo and Jack Rabe purchased Kubicheks Hardware in Blairstown, Iowa, and renamed it Rabe Hardware. What began as a small-town hardware store and heating and cooling shop was built on a simple belief: every customer should be treated like family, with honesty, integrity, and reliability.
Today, Leo’s son, Jason “Jake” Rabe, continues that legacy. After growing up in the family business and serving as an F-18 fighter jet mechanic during the Gulf War, Jake became the second-generation owner in 1994. Under his leadership, Rabe Hardware has grown into a full-service mechanical contractor serving residential, commercial, and agricultural customers throughout Eastern Iowa.
In 2007, Jake expanded the company to Vinton, Iowa, adding a second location that is now home to our expansive fireplace showroom. With more than 25 operable gas, wood-burning, and electric fireplace displays, it’s a place where customers can explore their options and experience the products firsthand.
Over the years, Rabe Hardware has also become a recognized leader in renewable energy, helping customers use solar and geothermal technology to improve efficiency and reduce long-term energy costs. Today, the third generation of the Rabe family is also involved in the business, helping carry our family legacy into the future.

It’s still home to our hardware store and the place where our service crews and trucks have started their days for decades. In 2007, we expanded our community presence by purchasing Travis True Value in Vinton and transforming it into Eastern Iowa’s most expansive fireplace showroom.
