Electrical Services in Iowa City
Because so many local homes were built long before modern power demands, older wiring frequently struggles to keep up with today's appliances and electronics. As such, Johnson County properties require a wide range of electrical work, from simple everyday repairs to major system upgrades.
It is common to find legacy components such as ungrounded two-prong outlets, brittle cloth insulation, outdated fuse panels, or active knob-and-tube wiring hidden above original plaster ceilings. A good portion of caring for these properties involves safely undoing decades of makeshift DIY fixes left behind by past owners.
Rabe Hardware handles it all. Family-owned, licensed, and insured in Iowa since 1979, we offer complete electrical services across Johnson County. Whether you need a quick outlet repair, a new light fixture installed, or a full system overhaul, our electricians bring your wiring up to modern safety standards cleanly and correctly.
We take emergency calls 24/7. Call (319) 308-5853 or contact us online to book electrical services in Iowa City today.

Service for Older Homes with Obsolete Wiring
In neighborhoods like Northside and Goosetown, the wiring is often older than the appliances it powers.
Before we quote anything, our electricians pull outlet and switch covers and trace circuits back to your service panel to see what sits behind the plaster. A house can hold three generations of wiring, and only the newest layer shows at the panel, so any quote written without that step is a guess.
From there, we stage the work rather than opening up the whole house at once. We ground the circuits serving your computers and kitchen appliances first, then replace your panel, and finally work through any remaining runs.
Spreading the work across phases also comes with the benefit of keeping your house livable and your budget predictable during the process.

Timely Electrical Work for Rental & Multi-Unit Properties
Student rentals near the university operate on tight calendars, with electrical work needing to be completed within short turnover windows between leases. We align our schedule directly with your turnover dates rather than our convenience, offering flexible weekend appointments to keep your units move-in ready on time.
Multi-unit properties add complexity with shared circuits, separate metering, and common-area power. For older homes that were converted into multi-family apartments decades ago, our electricians carefully trace and map every line to clarify exactly which panel feeds each unit.
Agricultural Electrical Services in Iowa City
Outside the city limits, rural properties require specialized electrical solutions. We handle everything from trenching long underground feeds to barns and workshops to wiring dedicated circuits for heavy machinery and installing durable, weatherproof hardware built for damp, dusty conditions.
Agricultural work is a routine part of what we do, as well. In livestock barns and hog confinement facilities, ventilation fans and climate systems cannot afford to fail. We design and install these critical circuits with real-world fault protection, ensuring your livestock stays safe and your operation keeps running without interruption.
